Chicago Canine Rescue

Jefferson Park Locally Owned

About

Dogs-only rescue on Elston taking pulls from open-intake shelters and owner surrenders. Walk-in appointments Thursday to Sunday, noon to 6pm.

A dogs-only rescue on Elston Avenue, trading since 2001, with a physical location you can visit and more than 8,000 dogs placed to date.

The model, which is the thing to understand first. Chicago Canine Rescue is limited-admission and foster-based — it chooses which dogs it takes, and most live in foster homes rather than kennels. In its own words, the dogs in its care "come from open-intake shelters, rural rescue partners with limited resources, and families who can no longer care for them."

That first category is the important one. An open-intake shelter is one that cannot legally turn an animal away — in Chicago that is Chicago Animal Care and Control, where every city stray goes. Rescues like this one pull dogs out of those shelters, which is how a limited-admission rescue and an open-admission shelter work as two halves of the same system rather than as competitors. If you are looking for a lost dog, start at CACC, not here. If you are surrendering a dog, this is one of the places that may be able to take it.

Each dog gets medical treatment and behavioural support before placement, which the rescue names explicitly alongside "thoughtful adoption services" — i.e. it matches rather than processes volume. Expect an application and a conversation, not a same-day walkout.

Visiting. Thursday to Sunday it takes walk-in appointments between noon and 6pm. Monday to Wednesday is by appointment only. That is more open than most foster-based rescues in this directory, which are appointment-only throughout.

On the neighborhood: 5272 N Elston is in Jefferson Park, out by Foster and Cicero. The surrounding blocks are also called Gladstone Park, so either name will get you there.

Good to Know
Hours, address, phone and the intake model all come from the rescue's own website, read 2026-10-02. Thursday to Sunday takes walk-in appointments noon to 6pm; Monday to Wednesday is by appointment only. Limited-admission and largely foster-based, so the dog you are interested in may not be on site. Ask before travelling to meet a specific dog. For a lost dog, Chicago Animal Care and Control is the place to start, not a limited-admission rescue. The area around 5272 N Elston is called both Jefferson Park and Gladstone Park.
