The Anti-Cruelty Society

The Anti-Cruelty Society

Chicago's oldest humane society, occupying a full campus in River North. Three separate things happen here and it is worth knowing which door you need.

Adoption Center — 510 N LaSalle Dr

• Sunday, Monday, Wednesday–Saturday: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
• Closed Tuesdays

Veterinary Clinic — lower level, 157 W Grand Ave. Phone 312-645-8051. Spay/neuter through to wellness care, by appointment only. This is one of the genuinely useful things in this directory: a shelter clinic open to the public is usually substantially cheaper than a private practice for routine work, and spay/neuter in particular. Worth pricing against the vets in the Veterinarians category before booking a routine procedure.

Animal Admissions — floor 1R. Surrenders and intake.

Main campus address is 157 W Grand Ave; general phone support runs 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, seven days. The adoption center has its own LaSalle Drive entrance.

The Tuesday closure catches people out. Adoptions are the only weekday thing here that closes.

A second location, and it is on the Far South Side. Anti-Cruelty runs a Pet Resource Center at 519 E 103rd Street in Roseland — a community space built around helping people keep the pets they already have, rather than rehoming them. Listed separately in this directory. That model matters: most surrenders are driven by money, housing or a veterinary bill, not by a change of heart.

Adoptable cats at six PetSmart stores, four of them in Chicago — Andersonville, Wrigleyville, Brickyard and the Elston Avenue store. Cats only, so outside this directory's scope, but worth knowing if you are looking for both.

Adoption fees are not published on this page. Ask what the fee includes.

Getting there: LaSalle at Grand, walkable from the Grand Red Line stop.
