The most important thing to know about the South Loop, if you have a dog, is that one of Chicago's three 24-hour emergency hospitals is here, and you can walk in at any hour. Start there; everything else on this page is for the other 364 days.
At 2am: VEG South Loop
Veterinary Emergency Group — South Loop — 1114 S Clinton St, phone 872-710-5226. Its own site: "open 24 hours, every day… No appointment needed, walk in 24/7." It is emergency only, not a general practice. The building is closer to the West Loop and Roosevelt Road than to the heart of the South Loop, so know where it is before you need it — and call on the way. The city's other 24-hour hospitals are on the Emergency & Urgent Care page.
Off-leash: two runs a few blocks apart
Coliseum Park Dog Friendly Area — 1466 S Wabash, and Fred Anderson Park Dog Friendly Area — 1611 S Wabash, a few blocks south. If one is packed, the other is a short walk.
Neither has a verified surface or fencing yet. Both need a Park District permit and tag for every dog, renewed each year — the Park District lists $10, Animal Care and Control $5, so confirm when you apply. Three dogs per person at most, no puppies under four months, no dogs in heat, no food inside the gates. The Dog Parks and Runs page has the rest.
Coffee and a drink
The Spoke and Bird — South Loop — 205 E 18th St, in the Prairie District. The company publishes a dog item on its own menu, under its own Dog Friendly heading: a Puppuccino, "housemade whipped cream, half a doggy biscuit." That page is company-wide rather than about this store in particular. Open from 7am every day, until 5pm Sunday to Thursday and 7pm on Friday and Saturday. Chicago's patio rules allow a dog water but not food, so that Puppuccino is worth asking about — the Cafés and Coffee Shops page explains.
Kasey's Tavern — 701 S Dearborn, in Printers Row. The dog welcome is reported by do312, not published: Kasey's own site says nothing about dogs or outdoor seating. The bar says a bar has stood on the spot for more than 130 years; the current one dates from 1974. Open from 11am daily, and from 10am for Sunday Bears home games.
Why a bar can sometimes do what a restaurant or café cannot is in Why a Chicago Bar Can Let Your Dog Inside and No Restaurant Can.
Vet and rehab
South Loop Animal Hospital — 1640 S Michigan. Weekdays 8am to 7pm and Saturdays 8am to 2pm; not an emergency hospital. Its own site publishes no phone number, and the address comes from several directories rather than from the practice, so confirm both before a first visit.
Healing Tails — 1921 S Archer. Canine rehab by appointment: physical rehabilitation, an underwater treadmill, therapeutic exercise, laser, massage, acupuncture and chiropractic. Open Monday to Thursday only. Credentials and prices are not published — the Specialty and Rehab page says what to ask.
Daycare, boarding and grooming
PUPS Pet Club — South Loop — 1332 S Michigan. Grooming, daycare and boarding. Paid street parking only, transport within a mapped local zone. Prices, vaccination rules and playgroup sizes are not published, and no weekend daycare closure is stated for this location, so confirm when you book.
PetSmart on Canal — 1101 S Canal. Three listings at one address:
- The store — adoption center, training classes and curbside pickup until 7pm. A separate PetSmart page lists veterinary urgent care here, but the store page does not, so ask.
- The grooming salon — open 7am to 9pm Monday to Saturday. Nail trims, teeth brushing and ear cleaning are walk-in; full grooms should be booked.
- PetsHotel and day camp — standard rooms (dogs from the same family can share) and private suites, with Pet Hosts and an on-call vet. It does not publish whether staff are on site overnight, vaccination rules or rates.
Petco Roosevelt Road — 613 W Roosevelt. Grooming, training and a vaccination clinic (not a full hospital).
Neither chain's store page says whether your dog may come in with you.
Living here with a dog
1130 South Michigan — up to two pets, a $450 one-time fee per dog, and a published list of restricted breeds that includes pit bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Huskies, Akitas and Malamutes. It has a 24-hour dog deck, a dog spa, outdoor exercise areas and grooming stations. Monthly pet rent and weight limits are not published.
1000M — 1000 S Michigan. Up to two pets, a $500 one-time fee, no security deposit. It says certain breeds and weights are restricted but does not list them — ask before you apply. Its own FAQ describes its dog facilities two different ways (a 7th-floor washing station and an outside run, or an indoor spa and a fenced park), so ask to see them on a tour.
Chicago itself has no breed ban — Illinois law bars one — but a landlord can restrict breeds, as both of these do. Pet-Friendly Apartments explains what renting with a dog usually costs.
What is missing here
There is no trainer, rescue, hotel or restaurant patio tagged South Loop in this directory yet. Those are gaps in the research, not claims about the neighborhood.
