One Tail at a Time — Bucktown Adoption Center

A rescue adoption center at 2144 N Wood St in Bucktown. It does two things almost nobody else in this category does.

Hours

  • Monday and Tuesday: closed
  • Wednesday–Friday: 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM
  • Saturday–Sunday: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Walk-ins, no appointment. You can turn up, see the dogs in the upstairs living room or the outdoor yard, and staff will bring one out to meet you. An application is still required to complete an adoption, but you can fill it in on your phone while you are there. Compare that with PAWS and CACC, where the appointment comes first — if you want to meet dogs before committing to a process, this is the place that lets you.

They publish their fees, which is rare:

  • Puppies: $350
  • Adult dogs: $300
  • Senior dogs: $150
  • Senior people adopting senior dogs: $100

Many dogs also have sponsored fees, and there are periodic half-price adoption events.

That senior-to-senior price is worth pausing on. An older dog with an older adopter is one of the better matches in rescue — a calmer dog, a known temperament, and a household with time — and it is the hardest match to make, because people worry about the years. Pricing it at $100 is a deliberate nudge, and a good one.

On adopting a senior dog generally: you are taking on a shorter relationship and probably higher vet bills, and you are getting a dog whose size, coat, energy and temperament are already settled rather than a genetic lottery ticket. If you have been put off by the idea of puppy training, look at the seniors first.

Every dog leaves with a martingale collar and leash. A martingale is the right collar for a newly adopted dog — it tightens just enough that a frightened dog cannot back out of it, without choking. Handing one over with every adoption is a small detail that says the organisation has thought about the first week.

Getting there: Wood Street just off Webster, near the Damen Blue Line and the #73 Armitage bus.

Hours, address, adoption process and the full fee schedule all verified from onetail.org. No direct phone number is published for this location — contact runs through their website.
