Chicago's largest patio, by its own claim

Recess is an open-air venue on Kinzie Street built among stacked shipping containers, with a multi-level layout and several bars. Its own site calls it "Chicago's largest patio"; Time Out describes it as billing itself as one of the city's largest, "complete with a multi-level set-up and multiple bars."

The hours on this listing are deliberately empty

Recess does publish a schedule on its own site. When it was read on 5 October 2026, that schedule was labelled as a special event window running 11 June to 19 July — a soccer-tournament timetable, not a regular one. No regular opening hours appear anywhere on the site.

Rather than pass a summer event schedule off as current, this listing leaves the hours field blank and says why.

Which matters more here than it usually would

Recess is outdoors, with no indoor room to retreat into. A patio bar may well keep a shorter season than a place with a roof, and nothing on the site states a closing date for the year. Call 312-801-1181 before you set out, particularly in cold weather — the trip is wasted if the gates are shut for the season, and this listing cannot tell you whether they are.

Where it actually is

838 W Kinzie is in River West, which this directory files under West Town. Guides and the venue's own marketing often place it in the West Loop, which is the neighborhood immediately to the south — so if you are navigating by neighborhood name rather than by address, use the address.

The dog claim

Dogs here are do312's report, from its dog-friendly patio guide. Recess's own site says nothing about them. Chicago's rules for dogs at venues that serve food are set out on the Patios and Restaurants page — outdoors only, own street entrance, water yes and food no — and for a venue that is entirely outdoors, the first of those is not the obstacle it usually is.
