About
A Ukrainian Village cocktail bar whose draw for dog owners is the back patio. The bar publishes no hours and no dog policy; the dog welcome is reported by dog guides.
What the bar publishes itself
Sportsman's Club is at 948 N Western Avenue, in Ukrainian Village. Its website is a single page: a drink menu, the address, and the phone number 872-206-8054. That is all of it. There are no opening hours on it, and nothing about dogs, so this listing carries no hours rather than borrowing a decade-old set from a listings site.
What the guides report
The back patio is the part that matters to a dog owner, and it is the part the bar itself says nothing about. Two dog guides put dogs there: do312's dog-friendly patio roundup names Sportsman's Club, and a 2019 guide to dog-friendly Chicago bars describes dogs in the back patio, resting under the communal picnic tables. A 2014 review of the bar describes that space as a large backyard patio with a summer bar and string lights.
Two cautions go with that. The second of those guides is seven years old, and two of the fourteen bars on it have since closed — so treat its details as colour rather than as current fact. And an outdoor space of this kind is seasonal in Chicago whether or not anyone says so. Call before you walk over in October.
Where it is
948 N Western is at the western edge of Ukrainian Village, which is how the bar and the local press both describe it. Some photo captions file it under Humboldt Park instead. The address is the thing to go by.
Why a bar can do what a restaurant cannot
Chicago's rules turn on a licence, not on goodwill: a premises holding a retail food establishment licence may take dogs only in a designated outdoor area, while a tavern not operating under that licence is not inside the same framework. Both code sections are quoted in full in Why a Chicago Bar Can Let Your Dog Inside and No Restaurant Can. This directory has not pulled licences for individual venues, and nothing here claims what Sportsman's Club holds — the patio is simply where the guides put the dogs.
If you lose a dog in Chicago, Chicago Animal Care and Control at 2741 S Western Avenue is the city's open-admission shelter and the first place to check.
