About
A Lincoln Park Irish pub trading at the same address since 1946, which calls itself Chicago's dog-friendly Irish pub in its own words and publishes exactly one rule: dogs must be leashed at all times.
It says so itself
The River Shannon's own website carries the tagline "Chicago's Dog-Friendly Irish Pub." Its About page is plainer still: "The best part of River Shannon? Besides the cold beer, friendly atmosphere, and free popcorn? It's the dogs. We love your furry best friends here." One rule is published alongside it — "Dogs must be leashed at all times."
That is about as direct as a dog policy gets. And notice what is missing from it: no patio, no beer garden, no "in our outdoor seating area."
Why a pub can say that and a restaurant cannot
The pub's own site mentions no patio, no beer garden and no sidewalk seating anywhere. That is worth understanding rather than reading as an omission.
Chicago Municipal Code 4-8-031 confines dogs to a designated outdoor area with its own street entrance — and it binds retail food establishments. A tavern whose business is drink is not under the same constraint, which is why a neighborhood bar can do something no restaurant on this site can. The Patios and Restaurants category page sets out the code in full, including the rule that a dog may be given water but not food in a dog-friendly area.
The Bars and Breweries page collects the venues that state an indoor welcome themselves. Filter by Dogs Inside to see the current list — that tag is only ever applied on a venue's own word, never on a guide's summary.
The Bark of Fame
The pub keeps a wall of Pup of the Month photographs — a running record of the regulars' dogs — and runs a Pup of the Month event. When its events page was read on 5 October 2026 it also listed a Halloween dog costume contest on Thursday 29 October, 6pm–9pm.
Eighty years in the same spot
"We've been here since 1946 all while staying true to our Irish roots," the pub's About page says. Free popcorn. It is one of several Chicago bars operated by Lodge Management Group, and the dog welcome is published for this address.
What its own site does not answer
How the Bark of Fame works or how a dog gets onto it, and whether water bowls or treats are kept behind the bar. Call 312-944-5087 if either matters for a first visit — and bring a bowl in the meantime.
Lost dog? Chicago Animal Care and Control at 2741 S Western is the city's open-admission shelter and the first place to look.
