About
257 acres of forest preserve inside the city on the south side, with a paved loop and a link to the Major Taylor Trail.
Amenities
Dan Ryan Woods is a genuine forest preserve inside the Chicago city limits — 257 acres at Western and 87th, with mature woods, ravines and CCC-built limestone structures from the 1930s.
For walking a dog there are two options. The Dan Ryan Trails are a paved one-mile loop, easy going and good for a short outing. From there the Major Taylor Trail runs 8.1 paved miles south toward Whistler Woods, which makes this one of the longest uninterrupted dog walks available on the south side.
There is parking, accessible bathrooms and a visitor centre.
On-leash dogs are permitted, which the Forest Preserves state explicitly for both trails. The district's three off-leash areas are all in the suburbs — there is no off-leash option here.
