Lakefront Trail — Central (Fullerton to McCormick Place)

Free Streeterville
Off-Leash Allowed No, leash required

About

The downtown stretch of the Lakefront Trail, past Navy Pier, the museum campus and Grant Park.

The central stretch of the Lakefront Trail, from Fullerton down past Oak Street Beach, Navy Pier, Grant Park and the museum campus to McCormick Place.

This is the busiest and most photogenic part of the trail, and the most crowded. Tourist volume near Navy Pier and Oak Street is heavy in summer, which is worth weighing if your dog is reactive or nervous around crowds. Early morning is a different experience entirely.

Bike and pedestrian paths are separated here as they are along the rest of the trail. Stay on the pedestrian side.

Dogs must be leashed. The Grant Park and Lake Shore East Dog Friendly Areas are both a short detour off this segment if you want off-leash time.

Good to Know
Trail facts confirmed 2026-09-22 from the Chicago Park District's Lakefront Trail page. NOTE: the Fullerton-to-McCormick split is this directory's own way of breaking up an 18-mile trail — not an official Park District segment. Leashing required: off-leash is only permitted inside a designated DFA. Very crowded in summer near Navy Pier and Oak Street Beach; worth avoiding with a reactive dog at peak times. Not verified: water fountains, shade, or event closures. Details checked 2026-09-22.
