Lakefront Trail — North (Ardmore to Fullerton)

Free Uptown
Off-Leash Allowed No, leash required

About

The northern stretch of the Lakefront Trail, from Edgewater down through Uptown and Lakeview to Lincoln Park.

The northern third of Chicago's Lakefront Trail, running from Ardmore Avenue in Edgewater south to Fullerton. This is the stretch most north side dog owners use daily.

Since the 2018 separation project the trail is split into a bike path and a pedestrian path along its whole length, which makes walking a dog here considerably less fraught than it once was. Stay on the pedestrian side.

Montrose Beach and its dog beach sit directly on this segment, as does Puptown, so a walk here can easily include off-leash time.

Dogs must be leashed on the trail itself. The Park District only permits off-leash inside a designated Dog Friendly Area.

Good to Know
Trail length (18 miles), endpoints (Ardmore to 71st) and the bike/pedestrian separation confirmed 2026-09-22 from the Chicago Park District's Lakefront Trail page. NOTE: the Ardmore-to-Fullerton split is this directory's own way of breaking up an 18-mile trail into useful pieces — it is not an official Park District segment. The CPD page does not state a dog or leash policy for the trail; leashing is required because off-leash is only permitted inside a designated DFA, per the Park District's DFA rules. Not verified: water fountains, winter clearing, or which access points have parking. Details checked 2026-09-22.
