Lakefront Trail — South (McCormick Place to 71st Street)

Free Hyde Park
Off-Leash Allowed No, leash required

About

The quietest stretch of the Lakefront Trail, running south through Bronzeville, Hyde Park and South Shore.

The southern third of the Lakefront Trail, from McCormick Place down to 71st Street, passing Burnham Park, Promontory Point, Jackson Park and the beaches along the way.

This is the least crowded part of the trail by a wide margin, which makes it the best stretch for a dog who finds the downtown crowds hard work. Promontory Point in particular is one of the better places in the city for a long, unhurried walk.

Bike and pedestrian paths are separated here as elsewhere.

Dogs must be leashed — off-leash is only permitted inside a designated Dog Friendly Area, and there is no DFA on this stretch.

Good to Know
Trail facts confirmed 2026-09-22 from the Chicago Park District's Lakefront Trail page. NOTE: the McCormick-to-71st split is this directory's own way of breaking up an 18-mile trail — not an official Park District segment. Leashing required throughout, and there is no Dog Friendly Area on this stretch, so plan for a leashed walk rather than off-leash time. The quietest section of the trail. Not verified: water fountains, winter clearing, parking at access points, or the current condition of the Promontory Point shoreline. Details checked 2026-09-22.
