Dog trainers in Chicago

Puppy classes, private sessions, group classes and behavior work — reactivity, aggression, separation anxiety — across the city.

Illinois does not license dog trainers

This is the thing to know before you hire one. Veterinarians are licensed by the state and can lose that licence. Dog trainers are not licensed at all: anyone can print a card and start charging. Nothing stops a genuinely excellent trainer from having no letters after their name, and nothing stops a bad one from inventing some.

So the useful question is not "are you certified" but "certified by whom." The credentials that mean something are awarded by independent bodies that test and require continuing education:

  • CCPDT — CPDT-KA and CPDT-KSA, the most widely held professional credential
  • IAABC — behavior consultants, the people to call for aggression or serious anxiety
  • KPA-CTP — Karen Pryor Academy, a training-school qualification
  • Fear Free Certified — handling that minimizes fear and stress, also held by many vets and groomers
  • DACVB — a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. This is a veterinarian with specialist training, the highest qualification in the field, and the right referral when a behavior problem might have a medical cause or need medication.

Each listing records the credentials the trainer publishes, and says so plainly when none are published. That absence is not evidence a trainer is bad — but you cannot tell from a website, and knowing what to ask is the next best thing.

So far, not one trainer in this category publishes a certification. That is a finding about the Chicago market, not about these particular businesses, and it is exactly why the question above is worth carrying to a phone call.

Ask about the method, too

A trainer who publishes how they work is telling you something useful even when they publish no credentials. PAWS Chicago's Training Center in Lincoln Park is the clearest example here: it names clicker training and positive reinforcement in its own words, and says instructors will develop an alternative method if a clicker does not suit your dog. Method stated plus flexibility stated is more than most Chicago trainers put in writing.

The shape of this category

It now has one dedicated training facility — the PAWS centre above, a building whose purpose is classes — alongside several daycare and boarding facilities that also train, including Canine Perspective in East Garfield Park, which publishes its training prices and is built for reactive and aggressive dogs.

That is one dedicated trainer, not a full category. Chicago has many independent trainers and behavior consultants and they are still being added. Until then, the honest summary is that this page is better for understanding what to ask than for choosing from a long list.

If your dog is reactive

Reactivity and aggression are behavior problems, not obedience problems, and they need a behavior consultant rather than a group class. An IAABC consultant or a DACVB veterinary behaviorist is the right call, and neither is in this category yet. Filter by the Reactive Dog Friendly tag across the site to find the facilities built to take reactive dogs at all.
