Healing Tails
A pet rehabilitation practice at 1921 S Archer Ave, at the southern edge of the South Loop near Chinatown.
Hours
- Monday–Thursday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, closed 1:00–2:00 PM for lunch
- Friday, Saturday and Sunday: closed
Appointment only. Four days a week, but each of them runs to 7 PM — the same logic as any rehab course: you will be coming back repeatedly, so evening availability decides whether you can actually finish a treatment plan. The trade-off here is a three-day weekend closure, so a Friday setback waits until Monday.
Services: physical rehabilitation, underwater treadmill, therapeutic exercise, laser therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic care.
On the underwater treadmill. This is the piece of equipment worth travelling for, and only a handful of places in the city have one. A dog walks on a belt inside a tank while the water takes part of its weight — so it can do real gait work weeks before it could bear full weight on land. For cruciate repairs, spinal recovery and severe arthritis it is the most useful thing in a rehab room. It is also expensive to install, which is why so few practices offer it.
On chiropractic: the directory lists what a practice offers. Veterinary chiropractic is the least evidence-supported service on this list — practitioners and owners report benefit, but the controlled evidence in dogs is weak, and spinal manipulation is not risk-free in an animal with an undiagnosed disc problem. Get a diagnosis from your vet first, and ask who will be performing it and with what training.
Practitioner credentials are not published on the site beyond doctor titles. For rehab specifically it is reasonable to ask whether the person treating your dog holds a CCRP or CCRT certification, and whether an acupuncturist is IVAS-certified — these are the recognised qualifications and a practice that has them will say so happily.
Pricing is not published. Ask for the per-session price and the expected number of sessions.
Getting there: Archer just south of Cermak, close to the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line and reachable from I-55, I-90/94 and Lake Shore Drive. One of the easier rehab clinics in the city to reach by car.
